PARAGUAY Paraguay lies halfway down the vast expanse of South America. On the map it looks small beside its neighbors, Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia, yet it is a third again as large as Italy, and with its 157,047 squares miles, about the size of California -but a fatter and flatter California that has been twisted and shaped by giant hands. And that in a way, is what has happened during Paraguay's long and violent history. It is a history of "beginning again" after desastrous wars and long periods of neglect and enforced isolation. (PY. Legend of Lace and Leyend) Guarani: L. Adam (1896) was the first to attempt, on the basis of some fifteen dialects, the comparative study of Tupí. He distinguished in ancient Tupí or Abañe'ênga two different varieties: a southern branch, or Guaraní proper, which developed into modern Guaraní and a northern branch, which developed into modern Tupí or Ñe'êngatu (G-S)
